Mastodon post to video

Paste a post link from any Mastodon instance that serves its public API, and get a vertical video of the post typing itself out.

  • Any instance with a public API, not just mastodon.social
  • Full @user@instance handle under the display name
  • Replies, boosts and the favourite star
  • Rounded square avatar and Mastodon's dark default

The example above was made in Reyoy, exported at 9:16 and 5.4 seconds long. It was typed by hand, so it carries the Recreated label. A post loaded from a real link renders without it.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Copy the post link

Links like mastodon.social/@name/113000000000000000 work, and so does the /users/name/statuses/id form some instances use.

  2. 2

Fetch it on the Mastodon page

Reyoy asks that instance for the public post and fills the card in.

  3. 3

    Pick the look

Mastodon's default theme is dark, so the dark card is the natural choice. The light card is there too.

  4. 4

    Export

Download the MP4 from your browser.

Drawn like Mastodon

The display name sits over the full handle, including the instance, so viewers can see where the post came from. The avatar is a rounded square, and a favourite is an amber star rather than a heart.

Instances that do not answer

Some instances limit their public API or only show posts to signed in users. If a link will not load, type the post into "Write it yourself". Hand typed cards carry a small Recreated label, as the example here does.

Formats

9:16 at 1080 x 1920 for vertical apps, 1:1 at 1080 x 1080, 4:5 at 1080 x 1350, and 16:9 at 1920 x 1080. All at 30 frames per second with no audio track.

Questions

Does it work with my instance?

If the instance answers its public statuses API without a login, yes.

Do I need an account?

No. Nothing asks for a login or a token.

Are images included?

No. Reyoy draws the text of the post, not its attachments.
