Hacker News to video

Paste an item link and get a video of the story, the Ask HN post or a single comment typing itself out, in the beige and orange layout people recognise.

  • Stories, Ask HN posts and single comments
  • Points, author, date and comment count on the card
  • Verdana, the beige panel and the orange bar
  • Read from the public Hacker News API, no login

The example above was made in Reyoy, exported at 9:16 and 6 seconds long. It was typed by hand, so it carries the Recreated label. A post loaded from a real link renders without it.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Copy the item link

Any news.ycombinator.com/item?id= link works, for a story or a comment.

  2. 2

Fetch it on the Hacker News page

Reyoy reads the item from the public API and fills in the title, text, author, points and comment count.

  3. 3

    Set the pace

The title types first, then the text, so allow for both when you set the speed.

  4. 4

    Download

    Export in your browser.

Good for launch posts

If your Show HN did well, a video of it is a simple way to share that on X, LinkedIn or in a newsletter. The card carries the points and the comment count the way the site shows them.

The example on this page is an Ask HN post typed in by hand, so it carries a small Recreated label. A post loaded from a real link renders without it.

Comments

Paste a comment's own link to render just that comment. It is how you share the one reply that said it best.

The look

Hacker News has no avatars, no rounded corners and no shadows, so neither does the card: the beige panel, the orange bar, the rank and the small grey vote arrow, in Verdana.
